Benjamin Pablo: Ancient Zapotec Bat Mask
Benjamin Pablo: Ancient Zapotec Bat Mask
Inspired by the Ancient Zapotec bat god, Benjamin Pablo created this contemporary mask in Jade and Turquoise colors. The mask was discovered by archeologists excavating a tomb in the ancient city of Monte Alban. The bat god was associated with the sacred world and the spirit ancestors.
This forceful, contemporary representation has sharp angular cuts contrasting with the smooth rounded edges. Benjamin chose to decorate it with the colors of two very important gems to all preColumbian civilizations, Jade and Turquoise. A stunning piece!
